Frequently Asked Questions

Company

What does the name FERMI come from?

The name comes from the Fermi Paradox, which asks why we haven’t seen evidence of alien life in the universe, despite the high likelihood of its existence.

When was FERMI launched?

We are still a new company. FERMI was officially launched in September of 2025.

Shipping and Returns

What are your delivery times?

All FERMI lamps are made to order. The current lead time is 2–4 weeks, although some orders may ship sooner. If you placed an order more than 4 weeks ago and haven’t received shipping info, please contact us at support@fermi.nyc. As a small operation, we work as quickly as possible while trying to ensure the highest quality product. You can get a full refund if you decide to cancel your order before it ships.

Free shipping is provided via UPS ground, which takes 3-5 business days depending on your location.

Do you ship internationally?

Due to different power standards, plug types, and legal regulations, it’s currently not realistic for us to produce lamps for international markets. We’re hoping to expand shipping to Canada and Mexico at some point in the future.

What is your return policy?

We accept returns of undamaged products received within the last 30 days. We will cover shipping of returns in original packaging. Contact us at support@fermi.nyc

Product Care and Use

What kind of bulbs can I use?

Important: FERMI lamps should only be used with LED bulbs. Incandescent and Halogen bulbs run at much higher temperatures and could potentially partially melt the body or shade of the lamp, or even start a fire.

Currently all lamps ship with Phillips Ultra Definition bulbs. These bulbs have a high color-rendering index, dim beautifully, and are relatively easy to find in stores or online. The Visitor and Nimbus lamps both use the standard A19 bulb shape, while the Nessi lamps use a larger G25 globe bulb. Any dimmable E26 bulb (the standard US bulb) will work in any of the lamps. The Nessi however will only look correct with a G25 globe. For a slight upgrade, Liii & Artman make a gorgeous matte white G25 bulb that also looks great in the Nessi.

Why LED bulbs?

Many lighting companies produce lamps with custom, built-in LEDs. While these are often rated to last for years or even decades, it's my experience that many LEDs don't last nearly as long as their expected lifespan. If a custom built-in LED fails, the lamp effectively become trash, or at best the user will have to go through an arduous replacement policy. Our lamps all use the standard US e26 socket, so replacing bulbs is simple and easy.

LED bulbs have come a long way since the early days of flat, washed-out colors that did not dim well. Today, LEDlightbulb technology offers many benefits over traditional incandescent bulbs: far less heat, much more efficient power consumption, and a longer life. FERMI lamps use trailing-edge dimmers that are specifically designed to work with LEDs. The Phillips High Definition bulbs included with each purchase have been selected for their great color-rendering index and smooth dimmability. They don't flicker, except occasionally at very dim settings. If you have tested with multiple bulbs and continue to have a flicker, reach out to support@fermi.nyc

How do I assemble my lamp?

The Visitor and Nessi lamps both come completely assembled. For the Nimbus lamp: the shade twists onto a cleat, and once properly seated it can be secured with a few turns of the included Allen wrench. Instructions are included.

How do I care for my lamp?

Always unplug your lamp before cleaning. Lamps can be gently cleaned with a damp cloth. A little dish soap can help if needed.

As a relatively soft bio-plastic, the Matte PLA material used for the lamps is susceptible to scratches. It’s best to avoid them in the first place, but if scratches do occur, they can be diminished by holding the scratched area over the steam from a boiling tea-kettle. Unplug the lamp first and keep hands away from the steam.

Flame-polishing is an even more effective way to remove scratches, but should only be undertaken with extreme caution. A quick pass from 10 inches away with a kitchen torch will instantly melt scratches away. Perform at your own risk!
